"It has been truly fascinating to learn that governance and its related structures are the main reasons why our business has not, as of yet, achieved its full potential. After only a few months of being on the Expedition Governance package I have found Sirdar’s methods to be uniquely practical and of immense value. My only regret is that Sirdar and Status did not meet up many years ago!" - James Thompson. Status Staffing. Cape Town. South Africa.

Chapter 8: Connecting with other teams

March 31st, 2011
A big mountain like Everest always attracts many teams to its slopes. To the purist mountaineer, having other climbers on the mountain can be distracting, but for most commercial expeditions there are major advantages to having other teams around. Primarily, you get to learn what is happening higher on the mountain from the teams that have been up there before you. They can tell you about difficult sections, particular dangers and hazards, and indicate safe regions. Being able to draw from the experience of other teams is absolutely vital to the success of your own journey to the summit.
Getting to know members of other teams provides an opportunity to form alliances, so that if your team gets into difficulties, you can call someone else for help. Similarly, to succeed in business today you need to network and form strong alliances with other organisations in order to draw from their expertise and experience during challenging times. Staying well connected to strategic partners and working closely with them will undoubtedly assist you on your journey towards Extreme Business Success, and ultimately to reaching the summit.

Chapter 6: Accelerating Success with Technology

December 17th, 2010

All successful expeditions make use of modern technology to broadcast where they are on the mountain, the challenges they are facing, and the small, but meaningful successes they are enjoying on a day-to-day basis. They make use of satellite technology to update websites, blogs and newsletters and they communicate with sponsors, financiers and other interested parties to promote themselves.

Successful expeditions make use of marketing and advertising links to support their expedition in order to maximize their publicity and leverage whatever opportunities they obtain as a result. These opportunities present themselves in many different ways, and usually take the form of additional sponsorship, important networking connections and expanded marketing situations.

If you want to take your company to the summit of Extreme Business Success in 2011, you need to make use of technology to do the same thing. Share your story with the world and take advantage of the resulting publicity to expand your market, increase the size of your business network and enhance your bottom line.

Start telling your story today… with passion!

Warmest regards and best wishes for the festive season,

Chapter 5: Planning Your Expedition Spending

October 21st, 2010

After celebrating that a sponsor has finally come on board for our expedition it is important to ensure that the funds are available. This is the exciting part, because we are now in a position to go out and purchase the important items of gear that will ensure our success. We are now also in a position to promote the climb to the media and take the time to train and prepare for the expedition.

Kick starting a business is no different. It is an imperative to have the financial backing to be able to secure premises (a base camp), order equipment (establish a base camp), prepare marketing material and take the business  and product to the market place. Yet it is also important to have a plan on how your funding will be used. Your budget and capital can so easily be eaten up with poor purchase choices, unnecessary expenses and unforseen costs. If your plan is clear then it is that much easier to get to the really fun part of getting your expedition going.

I think it is important to establish a secure base camp, so that when we launch ourselves onto the higher reaches of the mountain it is from a place of stability and security.

Build that base camp well!

Kind regards,

Ronnie Muhl

In support of the goal – do you have the support you need?

March 29th, 2010

It is all good and well having a dream to climb Everest, but big mountains can be dangerous places where people get injured and often die. The current statistics on Everest reveal that one in four climbers who attempt the summit will be successful, but of those one in four, one in fifteen of them will not make it back down alive again. These scary odds make it challenging to get the support of your loved ones around you and yet if you do not get their support you will be climbing with the wind in your face, rather than with it at your back.

Support of those you can trust is life saving

Support of those you can trust is life saving

You do not only need the support of your family and friends, you need the best possible support you can source when you finally get onto the mountain. This logistical support often comes at a price, but by not having it in place, you could pay the ultimate price.

It astounds me that so many people in business do not put in place impeccable support and as a result do not run their businesses as though their life depended upon it. Our businesses and careers are often at the centre of our lives and often take up more than one third of our time here on earth and yet so many people simply take that for granted.

On the Summit - as in Business, life-long bonds are formed that are critical to success

Without the support of those who are near and dear to us and without the support of capable and competent people around us, it would be virtually impossible to summit the world’s highest mountain.

Until next month – Thank you

Happy climbing, Ronnie Muhl

Chapter 1: Starting the journey and realising my vision

February 1st, 2010

Welcome to the first submission of a twelve part series of my journey to the roof of the world in 2007.

On the 14th of September 1979, I closed the cover of a book called ‘the Impossible Victory’. It is the story of the first two mountaineers to have summited Mt. Everest without the use of supplemental oxygen. The story inspired me so profoundly that later that day I wrote in my journal – “I will one day climb Everest”.

What a bizarre dream, when one considers that permits in those days were only issued to nations and not to individuals, but somehow I kept that dream alive, until one day I realised that dreams become real when you take that first step towards realising it. In 2003, I sat down and put a five year plan of action in place – I became very clear about the strategies that I would need to employ to make my dream a reality and then I started to diligently implement that plan.

Three years later I found myself on Mt. Everest, but sadly I needed to turn around high in the Death Zone as a result of a change in the weather and a faulty oxygen mask. Twenty seven year old dreams don’t die that easily for me and I knew that I would return to the mountain and persist until I ultimately achieved success.

This incredible experience taught me some amazing lessons. Without a very clear vision, the discipline to consistently hold that picture of my big goal clearly in my minds eye and the willingness to take planned action, I would not have realised my dream that has changed the course of my life for ever.

I hope you have enjoyed my first post about my journey up Mt. Everest. Every month i will post the next stage of my climb and all the blood, sweat and tears I had to endure to reach the summit of my dreams.

From day 1 of visualising my dream, to finally reaching my Summit, enjoy the journey:

I now hand you over to acclaimed business mountaineer, Carl Bates, to provide his insight into climbing ones personal Everest, day in and day out, in your own business.

Thank you,

Ronnie Muhl
