Board Evaluation Cost Drivers

Board evaluation cost drivers: what affects scope and pricing

Board evaluation is not a commodity. There’s no fixed price, because every board is different. The scope—and therefore the investment—depends on factors that are specific to your organisation. Understanding these drivers helps you anticipate the investment and make informed decisions.

Why board evaluations aren’t priced from a menu

A menu-based pricing model would be convenient but would be misleading. A simple 7-person board in a single location with no committees is fundamentally different in scope from a 15-person board with three active committees operating across three countries. The evaluation methodologies, interview complexity, and reporting depth are proportionally different. We price based on the actual scope of work.

Key factors that affect scope and pricing

Board size

Larger boards take more time to evaluate. A 5-person board requires fewer interviews than a 12-person board. Additionally, larger boards often have more complex dynamics and group interactions that need deeper exploration.

Committee structure

If your board operates committees (audit, remuneration, risk, etc.), these are evaluated as well. Evaluating three active committees adds meaningful scope compared to a board with no formal committees.

Interview depth

Do we conduct individual interviews, group interviews, or a combination? Depth affects scope. Some evaluations include extended conversations with key stakeholders outside the board; others focus exclusively on board members.

Contribution Compass profiling

Including a Contribution Compass exercise—where we map each director’s natural energy and area of maximum contribution—adds a layer of analysis. This reveals distribution of strengths across the board and complementarity between directors.

Geographic complexity

If your board members are spread across multiple time zones or countries, coordinating interviews and travel adds cost. A board all in one location is simpler to coordinate than a distributed board.

Stakeholder presentation

Do you want a written report only, or do you want us to facilitate a board presentation and discussion? A facilitated stakeholder session adds time and expertise.

Subsidiary boards

If your organisation has subsidiary or divisional boards, and you want us to evaluate these as well or assess their relationship to the parent board, scope increases accordingly.

What you’re investing in

When you engage Sirdar for a board evaluation, you’re investing in expertise. We bring experience from hundreds of board evaluations, trained consultants who know how to read group dynamics and extract honest feedback, and a structured methodology that turns feedback into actionable insights. You’re also investing in confidentiality—board members need to know their comments are safe, and we hold that trust sacred.

How to approach the conversation

If you’re considering a board evaluation, start with a scoping conversation. Tell us about your board, your challenges, and what you’re trying to achieve. We’ll listen, ask clarifying questions, and give you a clear picture of scope and investment. You’ll understand what you’re paying for and why, and you can make an informed decision about whether the engagement makes sense for your context.

FAQs

What’s a typical cost range for a board evaluation?

In a South African context, a board evaluation typically ranges from R50,000 to R100,000 or more, depending on the scope factors above. A smaller, simpler evaluation might be at the lower end; a large, complex evaluation with multiple committees and geographic spread might exceed this range. Always scoping before quoting ensures we’re aligned on what you’re paying for.

Is a board readiness diagnostic more affordable than a full evaluation?

Yes. A board readiness diagnostic is designed for organisations that don’t yet have a formal board structure, so it’s narrower in scope. It typically costs less than a full board evaluation because it’s focused on designing governance structure, not evaluating an existing board’s performance.

Can we do a partial evaluation to reduce cost?

Yes. Some organisations evaluate only the main board, not committees. Others skip individual interviews and use questionnaires only. These choices affect depth, but they can make the engagement more affordable. Be transparent about what you’re willing to trade off.

Do you offer ongoing evaluation or annual check-ins?

Some organisations benefit from periodic evaluations—a full evaluation every two to three years, with lighter touch check-ins in between. We can design a sequence that tracks progress and evolves as the board matures.
